One of the coolest experiences we had in Italy presented itself in surprising fashion. By complete coincidence — uncovered by some deft sleuthing by Aunt Jenn — we heard about an annual medieval faire hosted in the Tuscan town of Monteriggioni.
All by itself, Monteriggioni is an incredible 13th Century fortress constructed to defend the road to Siena from Florence aggressors. It remains in its original state and is incredible landmark for medieval history.
But during our trip, the Comune di Monteriggioni was hosting its annual Feste Medievali di Monteriggioni.
The cousins had a chance to shoot a crossbow, practice jousting, and dance to medieval music.
The festival also included battle reenactments, detailed religious ceremonies, authentic food, period entertainment, and an array of fascinating things to see and do. It was nearly impossible to pull ourselves away.
